Small Business SEO
Try not to yawn or drift off to a daydream just for a second as we talk about SEO for your small business. Yes, we know, it’s not the sexiest of topics — nor is it the easiest to understand. But if you want search engines like Google to find your small business, you need to have a strategy for SEO. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is one of the most confusing aspect of the digital marketing space. We continue to meet clients who previously “had a SEO guy” but never really knew if that service was completed. If you want to know more about SEO, read up below:
What is SEO?
In order to get your website ranking well organically on search engines, you need a series of strategies to ensure your site is search engine optimised. Basically, if customers type a certain string of keywords, the search engine (Google, Bing etc) lists your site first (or at least on the first page). The better the SEO is for your website, the better you rank on Google and the faster your target audience will find you.
Know your keywords
Keywords are important for your small business. Yes, you’ve been told to find out what they are but it’s always too hard. Basically, you just need to answer this question: What will potential customers type into Google to find your small business? These words or phrases are the keywords you can use for your small business. Of course, you won’t know these words if you don’t know your own business or your target audience so you need to sort that one out first. It’s best if you know your short tail keywords and your long tail keywords, too. To give you an example, our keywords would be ‘digital marketing small business’ or ‘small business content creation’ or ‘small business SEO’. List down what your keywords are before hiring someone to optimise your site. It’ll make the whole process easier.
Do more than keywords
SEO is not just all about keywords too. You need to think of things like listing your small business in local directories, having fresh content on your site, ensuring your website is mobile-friendly and so on. Start with Google MyBusiness or your local council. Make sure you are listed in business directories in your area (there are a lot of free ones out there, you just need to do some research). Also, look into local SEO and how to implement it. Your digital marketing strategy needs to have these things in place as they go hand in hand. Seriously consider having a blog on your site as that helps with SEO as well.
